The 88-year-old has remained in hospital since Friday.
The Vatican have issued an update on the health of Pope Francis after the leader of the Catholic Church was rushed to hospital last week.
Pope Francis’ weekend engagements were cancelled following his diagnosis of bilateral pneumonia.
In an update on his health, The Vatican have said that the pontiff spent a peaceful night in the hospital and even ate breakfast this morning.
Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See press office, said Pope Francis was in good spirits and was grateful for people’s prayers.
He has been in the Gemelli hospital in Rome since Friday for bronchitis treatment. Bronchitis can lead to more serious conditions such as pneumonia.
It is not the first health scare that the 88-year-old has had. In the recent past, he has suffered from influenza along with other health complications.
The Vatican have described his health condition as “a complex picture.”
Bilateral pneumonia can cause problems with breathing, after causing inflammation and scarring of the lungs.
It remains unclear as to how long Pope Francis will remain in hospital, with one Vatican spokesperson saying that he would require an “adequate” stay.
