The incident was captured on a video which has since been widely shared on Twitter
West Ham and the Metropolitan Police are investigating video footage in which a supporter can apparently be heard directing Islamophobic abuse towards Mo Salah during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at the London Stadium on Monday night.
The Egyptian international can be seen preparing to take a corner kick in the video when someone is heard shouting “Salah, you fucking Muslim, fucking Muslim cunt”.
The Met police have since indicated that they are aware of the footage, which has since been circulated on Twitter, but that no arrests have been made.
‘Anyone who witnesses inappropriate behaviour during a match is urged to bring it to the attention of a steward or police officer,’ their statement said.
West Ham have also made it clear that they are taking immediate action to identify the person(s) responsible, promising permanent bans for anyone found guilty.
“At West Ham United, we have a zero tolerance policy to any form of violent or abusive behaviour,” a spokesperson told Sky Sports.
“We are an inclusive football club. Regardless of age, race, religion or belief, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment or disability, everyone is warmly welcomed at London Stadium.
“Anyone identified committing an offence will have their details passed to the police and will face a lifetime ban from London Stadium. There is no place for this kind of behaviour at our stadium.”
