This is a divisive one
A woman has angered her ex-fiance after selling his family heirloom ring to cover the cost of their cancelled wedding.
Writing on the Am I The A**hole subreddit, the woman told the tale.
The Redditor, a 27-year-old woman, explained that she was supposed to get married to her fiance Mason on the 20th of this month, but that she recently caught him cheating on his ex, so called off the wedding.
But because it was so close to the wedding, everything had been booked and she struggled to get any money back as most of the bookings were non-refundable.
She said she had lost around $20,000 (£14,700), and had taken out a loan to cover the cost.
Although her and ‘Mason’ had agreed to share their finances when they got married, he “no longer had to share finances” once the wedding was called off, so she had to find a way to pay off the cost on her own.
She therefore threatened to sell the family heirloom ring he proposed to her with, but Mason ignored her.
The woman then found out through a mutual friend that Mason had “read the messages and told everyone he didn’t care because [she] ‘wouldn’t do it’.” She told the mutual friend to let Mason know that if she didn’t hear from him in 24 hours, she would sell the ring – but the friend came back to say Mason “didn’t care” and “didn’t think [she] would do it.”
She decided to sell the ring, which was worth $25,000 (£18,000) and had belonged to his great grandmother.
He had apparently asked for the ring back, but they had “never got around to arranging a time he could pick it up.”
She wrote: “So the next day I sold the ring to an online website and messaged Mason to tell him it had been done and told him he shouldn’t have underestimated me. He started cussing me out, saying I didn’t scare him and that he would be around for the ring later.
“True to his word, he came to my house demanding the ring and I told him I sold it already and showed him the proof.
“He blew up at me, saying I was a petty b**** and that I shouldn’t have sold it because it wasn’t just a ring, it was an heirloom that meant a lot to his family.
“A lot of my family members think I overreacted and shouldn’t have gone to extreme measures as it will be hard for him to get the ring back, if he even can at all.”
She finished by asking: “AITA for selling his great grandmother’s ring?”

The top comment on the post reads: “You gave him all the warning in the world. Can’t be TA [the a**hole] given that.”
Another said that whilst usually they think engagement rings and heirlooms should be returned after a breakup the cheating in this example makes it different, writing: “He cheated a month before the wedding, blocked your messages, refused to help pay and mocked you. As Reddit loves to say – he f***ed around and found out. NTA [not the a**hole]”.
But some thought it was harsh to sell the ring.
One person criticised the Redditor for taking out such a big loan for the wedding and said they should have given the ring back. They did admit that her ex “sucks for cheating” though and for expecting her to foot the bill on her own.
