A new poll suggests that the majority of young Brits want to see the monarchy abolished in favour of an elected head of state

Among those aged 18-24, 41 per cent of people want to see the monarchy abolished – a massive shift in public opinion and the first time a YouGov poll has found such a result.

In contrast, in 2019 just 26 per cent of young people said they would want an elected head of state.

There is also stark generational divide on the monarchy, with 81 per cent of over 65s supporting the monarchy.

However, while abolishing the monarchy is popular among young people, 61 per cent of all people polled still supported the existence of the monarchy.

The new figures come after a string of controversies in the royal family, including Prince Andrew’s links with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and Prince Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah in which they accused the royal family of racism.
