It is the first time a vice-president has received the honour
US President-elect and Vice-President-elect, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been named as TIME magazine‘s ‘person of the year’.
The shortlist for the prestigious prize also included the outgoing US president, Donald Trump, as well as frontline medical workers, and also a fourth nominee, the global movement for racial justice.
Time tweeted: “The Biden-Harris ticket represents something historic.”

Person of the Year is not just about the year that was, but about where we’re headed #TIMEPOY https://t.co/H4uzUe8Pli pic.twitter.com/YMylCvbkZT

Every American president since Franklin D. Roosevelt has been a winner of the accolade, but this is the first time a vice-president has received it.
The Person of the Year is usually given to an individual, but multiple people who greatly affected the US and the world altogether have been named.
The honour, which was first awarded in 1927, was last year awarded to its youngest ever winner – teenage climate activist, Greta Thunberg.
In other honours, Time magazine named the Korean pop group BTS as its Entertainer of the Year.
LeBron James, who helped the LA Lakers to the NBA title this year, as well as being a vocal advocate for racial and social justice, was crowned Athlete of the Year.
