Rudd resigned on Sunday following her involvement in the Windrush scandal.
Theresa May has today announced that communities secretary Sajid Javid has now been appointed home secretary following the resignation of Amber Rudd.
Javid takes the senior role in the Conservative government after the Windrush scandal culminated in a leak on Friday that proved Rudd was aware of immigration targets, and even boasted about the number of people she could deport, despite professing that she did not know about the figures.
Michael Gove was rumoured to be the front-runner to replace Rudd but it is the former Deutsche Banke managing director Javid who has taken up the position.
He has served as the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Services since 2016 and has been the MP for Bromsgrove, Worcestershire since 2010.
The new home secretary’s parents emigrated from Pakistan in the 1960s. He spoke at the weekend about his initial reaction to the treatment of Windrush migrants. He said: “I thought that could be my mum … my dad … my uncle … it could be me.”
