David Davis has handed in his resignation as Brexit Secretary
The move comes days after Theresa May won the cabinet’s backing for her Brexit plan. Davis handed in his letter at around midnight on Sunday night. In his resignation, he gave his opinion that: “The general direction of policy will leave us in at best a weak negotiating position, and possibly an inescapable one.”
He also said that he thought it “look less and less likely” that UK will leave the single market and customs union.
Davis’ tenure in the role has been, like everything connected to the government’s Brexit stratergy, somewhat controversial and often directionless.
Which means that of course, there were plenty jokes on Twitter.
The best was based on the meme of the moment, Harry Maguire talking to his girlfriend.

And of course there was a Simpsons reference.

Journalists: what a lovely weekend. Wow. Pride. The football. It feels like a whole different country! Like there could be a new sense of national unity? God, I’ve barely even thought about Brexit.
