The JOE Friday Pub Quiz: Week 320

Charlie Herbert

Sponsored by the UK Government’s ‘Enough’ campaign tackling violence against women and girls

Hello, and welcome to a different pub quiz

This week’s pub quiz will be addressing an incredibly important issue in our society: violence and abuse against women and girls.

Violence against women and girls comes in many forms, both physical and non-physical.

It can be controlling behaviour in a relationship; it can be verbal or physical harassment in public, online or at work. These are all forms of abuse.

Half of women aged 16-34 in England and Wales have experienced some form of harassment over the past year. This can include unwanted, persistent attention, stalking, unwanted comments or unwanted sexual advances.

It is not only a woman’s issue. This is a societal issue and the onus needs to be on perpetrators to change and us, as bystanders, to challenge it.

Yet many of us remain uncertain over what actually constitutes abuse and don’t know what we can do to challenge it. Harassment is so common that it has even become normalised for some people.

Even if we recognise that these behaviours are unacceptable, how many of us would intervene if we witnessed sexual harassment or abuse taking place?

So the point of a round on violence against women being included in this week’s quiz is simple: to raise awareness of what abuse is and let people know this sort of behaviour is always unacceptable. As a society we can all call out abuse when we see it.

We’ll get underway with this important round, and then onto the usual general knowledge, sport and entertainment questions.
