We’ve all seen that advert on the tube, haven’t we?
If you haven’t seen it, count yourself lucky. But also look at it because it’s fucking insane. I am of course talking about the Dettol advert seen on London Underground platforms. The advert that just listed literally the worst things about commuting to and working in an office, including “the sound of the alarm”, “those funny carpets” and “your boss’s jokes” as reasons to miss office life.
Now, there are two possibilities here. It’s either intentionally insane, with the ‘creatives’ behind it hoping for it to be widely mocked and therefore create a mass discussion on social media. In which case, well done, Dettol. You have succeeded. But I think that would be giving the people in the world of advertising too much credit. The more likely scenario is that the people behind this idea completely misread the public mood and actually think people long for the return of “water cooler chat.”
My colleague Wayne Farry dissected every ounce of bullshit in the advert here. Read it after you’ve done the quiz.
