Another UFC champion now wants to do a Conor McGregor and win two world titles

Another two-weight world champ in the making?

Ben Kenyon

Conor McGregor changed the game yet again on Saturday night when he schooled Eddie Alvarez to become the UFC’s first ever two-weight world champion.

The Irishman had stated his intentions to hold two UFC belts simultaneously, as he did in Cage Warriors before, from the moment he set foot in the Octagon back in 2013.

The Notorious realised his dream on a truly historic night as Madison Square Garden when he ruthlessly dispatched lightweight king Alvarez with an unimpeachable performance to become the 145 lb and 155 lb champion.

Nobody has ever done this before in the 23-year history of the world’s premier MMA organisation.

But now it looks like McGregor’s precedent-setting, boundary-pushing feat has inspired another UFC champion to emulate his achievement and go after a second world title.

UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk, who fought and won on the same UFC 205 card at MSG, wants to be given the chance to ‘do a McGregor’.

She’s already proved herself to be one of the most enduring champions in the UFC with four title defences, second only behind the great Demetrious Johnson (nine) in terms of current champions’ title defences.

She’s on an incredible 13-fight winning streak after a hard-fought victory over fellow unbeaten Polish fighter Karolina Kowalkiewicz.

The 115 lb champion would want a shot at the UFC’s mooted 125lb flyweight division title, if the weight class becomes a fully-fledged division.

‘Sure, it can happen in 2017,’ she told Ariel Helwani on the MMA hour who asked if she had designs on becoming a two-weight champion.

‘I earned that, I deserve that.

‘I feel like I got so much attention from the media, from the international media, from Dana.

‘I put on great fight again and I think that may happen now. I’m very calm about that, I just want to enjoy my fight.’

She added that she intends to talk to Dana White and the UFC to see if they can make it happen next year.

McGregor really has lit a fire in the belly of fighters up and down the UFC ranks to go after the legendary fights.
