If you thought Aston Villa had hit rock bottom when they lost 6-0 at home to Liverpool, you were wrong.
Making the league’s 8th-placed team look like world-beaters was bad, sure, but Villa have gone one step further and contrived to lose to their own under-21 team.
The point of the development league is to give opportunities to players deemed not ready for first team action, but it seems Villa’s youngsters and fringe players can’t do worse than the first team.
According to Sky Sports, first-teamers including Idrissa Gueye, Leandro Bacuna and Scott Sinclair were involved in the 3-0 defeat, as was second choice goalkeeper Brad Guzan – and to make matters worse, the game was played in front of manager Remi Garde.
Either it means Villa’s under-21s are better than Leicester (3-2 winners over Villa), Chelsea (2-0) and Arsenal (2-0), or the first team have somehow got even worse.
We know what our money’s on.
