Well fucking played.
Whilst other clubs go to more and more elaborate lengths to present their major new signings to the public – be they cheesy videos, lame Whatsapp efforts, or La Liga style stadium presentations – Bayern Munich just casually blew everyone else out of the water with a simple tweet.
The canny Bundesliga operators had already amazed the football world with the shrewd bit of business of signing James Rodriguez on a two-year loan (with an option to buy in 2019 for £31m), in the same window that Swansea have priced Gylfi Sigurðsson at £50m. But their announcement of the deal was even better.
You may or may not be aware that the Colombian playmaker was subject to the best/worst headline of all time during the 2014 World Cup, when the Times of India tried (and failed) to go for a 007-themed pun with this travesty…
Well, the US Bayern Twitter account showed that they’ve got their finger on the pulse of social media and football meme culture by going with the exact same “The name is Bond, James RodrÃguez” headline. Well played you cheeky Bavarian scamps, well played.
