Watch: Ben Woodburn produces moment of class to give Liverpool lead against Athletic Bilbao

A special moment

Simon Lloyd

Last November, Ben Woodburn became Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer.

Understandably, many of the club’s supporters are excited about what’s still to come from the youngster, who only turns 18 in September.

Although it’s still a little early to expect Woodburn to start featuring regularly in Jürgen Klopp’s first team, his talent is obvious, as those in attendance for the preseason friendly against Athletic Bilbao in Dublin on Saturday afternoon will testify.

Liverpool had taken the lead at the Aviva stadium through Roberto Firmino penalty after 21 minutes. The Spanish side had equalised nine minutes later through Inaki Williams, and that was how things remained until the hour mark.

A half-time substitute, Woodburn initially struggled to get into the game having been asked by his manager to take up a position in midfield – a deeper role than he is usually expected to play.

But as the ball fell to him on the edge of the opposition’s area, he produced a moment of real class. Faking to shoot, the 17-year-old nudged the ball on to his left foot, before thumping the ball into the corner of the goal.

Liverpool sealed their victory ten minutes from time, when Dominic Solanke, a summer arrival from Chelsea, added a third.
