“Tonight, after they released all that energy, he still felt the way he felt”
Deontay Wilder’s trainer has revealed why the American refused to show respect to Tyson Fury following his knockout defeat to the heavyweight.
In the build-up to the fight the rivalry between Wilder and Fury had been intense, with a war of words exchanged before both did battle in the ring, which the ‘Gypsy King’ emerged victorious after knocking down Wilder in the 11th round to win the third and final of the trilogy of fights between the pair.
After the fight, Fury had gone over to speak to Wilder to show a mark of respect, however the ‘Bronze Bomber’ had other ideas.
Fury said after the fight: “I said, ‘Well done mate,’ and he said ‘I don’t want to show any sportsmanship or respect’. I said ‘No problem.’
“Very surprised. Sore loser. Idiot.”
In response to Fury’s claims, Wilder’s trainer Malik Scott told ES News that his fighter had rejected the approach as his feelings on Fury hadn’t changed.
Scott said: “Deontay, obviously, he looks at Fury as a man he had serious issues with concerning certain allegations and certain things he’d seen with his own eyes.
“Tonight, after they released all that energy, he still felt the way he felt.”
Despite being part of the losing side, Scott admitted that the better man on the night won and that Fury is one of the best in the heavyweight division.
He said: “I always said in this whole build-up – I never s***ed on his skills or the kind of fighter he was,” Scott insisted.
“After the last knockdown, the referee waved it off, I had no problem with it. Deontay fought his heart out. He was great, Fury was greater tonight.”
