Adam Johnson’s contract with Sunderland has been terminated.
Sam Allardyce had already confirmed that the winger would miss this weekend’s clash with Manchester United after he pleaded guilty to two child sex offences on Wednesday, but it appears they have now gone a step further.
In a statement, the club said: ‘In light of Adam Johnson’s guilty pleas, the club has today terminated his contract with immediate effect.
The club will make no further comment.’

Johnson has already seen his sponsorship with Adidas cancelled following his guilty plea, and others are sure to follow suit.
The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to kissing a 15-year-old girl as well as grooming her over the internet – but has denied two further charges of sexual activity.
His trial is set to begin on Friday and is expected to last two weeks.
