Brownlee brothers leave Twitter in awe after *another* triathlon medal double

A stunning achievement

Tom Victor

Remember four years ago when praise rained down on Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee after the brothers took first and third respectively in the Olympic triathlon?

Well, they’ve gone one better in Rio, securing a one-two for Great Britain and Yorkshire.

Ali took gold for a second straight games, with Jonny adding a silver to the bronze he took in London in 2012, with just six seconds separating the siblings.

It was an incredible achievement from the pair, especially in the unforgiving Rio heat, and it was recognised in spades by those watching from home.

With Jonny improving on his London finish, could he make the step up again in Tokyo in 2020?

He’ll have to get past his brother to do so, but he’ll be 30 years old when the next games rolls around and his brother will be 32, older than two of the three men to win Olympic gold before him.

It wasn’t just fans and journalists bowing down to their dominance – athletes from a variety of sports recognised the quality required to put in such a great performance.

The double medal brings Team GB’s tally for the games up to 52 at the time of writing, with the 19 golds and 20 silvers keeping them in second place ahead of China.
