So far, 2017 has been a year to forget for Carl Frampton and his team.
The year kicked off with Carl Frampton losing his rematch to Leo Santa Cruz in Madison Square Garden. Not only did it mark Frampton’s first loss as a professional, but it also marked the end of his reign as WBA super-featherweight king.
July was supposed to be the redemptive month for ‘the Jackal’. Frampton was scheduled to take on Andres Gutierrez in a WBC title eliminator in Belfast’s SSE Arena. However, after missing weight by 1lb, Frampton ruled himself out of the prize of a title fight against champion Garry Russel Jr.
The fight ended up getting called off entirely because of an accident Gutierrez suffered the night before the fight.
As if the year wasn’t going badly enough for Team Frampton, there are now reports of unrest in the camp.
Carl Frampton stood down as a board member of Cyclone Promotions 10 days before he was scheduled to fight Gutierrez. McGuigan has been his manager since he turned professional in 2009.
