Everton’s FA Cup fourth round victory over Carlisle United was marred by reports of a racist incident in the first half.
Fans were warned that abuse would not be tolerated, following an incident in the aftermath of Arouna Kone’s opener for the away side.
Cumbria Police have opened an investigation into the allegations, with Superintendent Justin Bibby saying in a statement: ‘We are investigating allegations of racist behaviour directed towards Everton players following the first goal.’
And Keith Curle, manager of the League 2 side, made clear his belief that such actions are never acceptable.
“It is not accepted at all,” Curle told the BBC.
“Both clubs don’t want anything to do with racism. I will be very disappointed if any Carlisle fans have been associated with that.”
Supporters of both clubs were also quick to condemn the incident, which has no place anywhere in football.
Result regardless this should have been a celebrated day for the people of Carlisle. And racism is the story. Absolutely sick making.
