Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths has been charged by Uefa for ‘provoking spectators’ after his side’s Champions League qualifier against Linfield last week.
Uefa have opened disciplinary proceedings against both clubs following the game at Windsor Park and the case will now be heard by Uefa’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on July 20.
The game, which Celtic won 2-0, was temporarily stopped at one stage as Griffiths had a bottle thrown at him by a member of the crowd as he attempted to take a corner. Bizarrely, the Scotland international received a booking from the referee in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
The yellow card received by Griffiths was one of five received by Celtic during the game – enough for them to be charged with ‘improper conduct of the team’ by European football’s governing body.
Linfield’s charges relate to the ‘throwing of objects’ by their supporters and also a pitch invasion.
After the game had finished, Griffiths tied a Celtic scarf around one of the goalposts, an action that angered Linfield supporters, causing some of them to attempt to get on to the pitch.
The two sides are set to meet again this Wednesday in Glasgow.
