Charlie Nicholas has no faith in the Scotland team, according to his ‘combined’ XI

Not holding out much hope

Given the shambolic nature of England’s exit to Iceland at Euro 2016, it’s safe to say that expectations of the current crop of players available to Gareth Southgate aren’t too high.

Having been handed one of the kinder World Cup qualification draws, the Three Lions currently sit top of their group after three matches, winning two and drawing one.

On Friday night, they face Scotland at Wembley – the first competitive meeting between the two countries this millennium.

Even though Scotland, who haven’t appeared in a major tournament since 1998, aren’t at their best right now, you’d still expect some from north of the border to fancy their chances of getting something out of the game.

Not Charlie Nicholas, however.

The Sky Sports pundit, who earned 20 caps for Scotland during his playing career, doesn’t hold out much hope for his countrymen if his combined XI for the match is anything to go by. Either that or he has no idea what the word ‘combined’ means.

A quick scan of the team below and you’ll notice  that not a single Scotsman makes it.

“I’m afraid to say none of Scotland’s players would displace an England player,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“Perhaps the goalkeeper role would be the closest competition, with David Marshall in good form for Hull while Joe Hart has been bombed out by Manchester City.

“England have been pretty average but they’ve still got too much quality for Scotland, who really do need to go out and win to get back in the mix. A draw isn’t much good.”

We’re sure those Scots making the journey down to Wembley will have a slightly more optimistic approach to the match.
