Ask any Newcastle fan about Shola Ameobi, and they’ll tell you he’s a stand-up guy.
The former Magpies striker showed himself to be a decent bloke during more than a decade with his hometown club, but the great gestures haven’t stopped there.
Back in October, he joined Bolton Wanderers on a short-term deal which ran out last weekend.
He’s been a useful addition to the squad, scoring his first Trotters goal in last weekend’s 3-1 victory over MK Dons, Bolton’s first win since the turn of the year.
Financial woes mean the Lancashire club cannot afford to offer the Nigeria international a new deal, but he has found the noblest of solutions.
Ameobi has offered to play for free in an effort to help Bolton climb away from danger at the foot of the Championship table.
But sadly an embargo on registering new players means they are unable to renew the deal.
The club is in deep trouble, but at least they have one man fighting for them.
