George Lockhart has worked with some of the top UFC stars over the past few years and prepared them to get in the best fighting shape possible.
When Conor McGregor wanted to get his first weight cut right for his 155lbs UFC bow, he called on Lockhart.
McGregor went so far as to invite Lockhart to Ireland so he could prepare all his meals in the lead-up to his UFC 205 victory over Eddie Alvarez.
Lockhart added some flavour to basic chicken and rice meals by adding the likes of fresh pesto, lime and ginger. It certainly won McGregor’s favour. A week out from that fight, Alvarez told UFC Embedded:
“Conor is so lean, and the leaner you are the more muscle you have and the more muscle you have, the more water you can hold. That makes it easier for us to do our job. It’s going to be a walk in the park.”
He was right, in more ways than one.
Lockhart often gives dietary and fitness tips to followers on the Tristar YouTube page. In response to a query about the best meal or snack to have after a workout, the former marine provided a simple answer that most of us can easily follow. He said:
“I don’t want to have a low blood sugar when I start working out, especially if I am doing an explosive workout – something like sparring or heavy weight-lifting.
“Post-workout, you definitely need to take in fast-acting carbs and a lot of them – depending on the intensity and duration of the workout. A lot of people don’t realise this but they will work out and have nothing [to eat] after it. ‘Oh I had a protein shake…’ and then they’ll get home two or three hours after and they’re starving. At that stage, they over-indulge themselves.
“If you give your body what you need, when you need it, later on it you won’t have that [hunger]. Personally, I like to eat my carbs. There’s a saying that the best diet is the right diet for you. I like to eat raisins, cranberries and dates are a good one. That’s a lot of sugar and it is fast-acting. It gets to your body quickly and replenishes you. It also has magnesium and a bit of calcium too.”
Sounds simple enough to us.
