Conor McGregor may be medically suspended until next year

Medical suspensions have been released

Darragh Murphy

Conor McGregor had a fractured ankle before he took to the Octagon against Nate Diaz.

Head coach John Kavanagh admitted while speaking to Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour that a post-fight X-ray discovered a preexisting fracture to McGregor’s ankle and the medical suspensions released after that interview suggest that we may not see ‘The Notorious’ in action until 2017.

Although he had his shin already cleared by doctors, according to Kavanagh, the fractured ankle must be cleared by an orthopaedic doctor or else McGregor will be ruled out until the middle of next February.

The minimum suspension for McGregor, given the damaging nature of his UFC 202 war with Diaz, means he will be out of action until late October at the earliest while no contact is allowed until October 5.

Therefore even if his ankle is cleared, McGregor would struggle to compete at UFC 205 in New York on November 12 with such a short training camp.

Diaz, meanwhile, has been handed a much shorter minimum medical suspension as his injuries were primarily superficial. He is coincidentally suspended until 20 September, which when written as 20/9 reads like the area code of his native Stockton, with no contact until 11 September.
