We may have reached the stage where Conor McGregor can hold his tongue no longer.
The UFC featherweight champion has thrown the world of mixed martial arts into disarray with Tuesday’s retirement announcement, and the lack of further updates – save for a hastily-deleted tweet – has only led to wild speculation across the board.
But now the Irishman is poised to clear things up…or so it seems.
Ok no more games.
I am going to release a statement shortly.— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) April 21, 2016
All we know at present is that the 27-year-old, who lost his undefeated UFC record to Nate Diaz in March, will not appear at UFC 200Â as things stand.
There has been talk of him being forced to relinquish his belt if he makes no further move following his announcement, with the winner of the upcoming bout between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar potentially being named champion (rather than interim title-holder).
Speculation about a move to WWE has followed, though a recent training video has seen some suggest he will not be stepping away from the UFC after all.
And now, following the pledge to release a new statement, he has garnered plenty of attention, from pleas to remain in the game…
@TheNotoriousMMA 😩 just please don't be done!
