Conor McGregor’s movement coach reveals the secret that makes him untouchable in the UFC (Video)

Conor McGregor told the world they would see a very different beast when he faced Jose Aldo in the main event at UFC 194.

The Irishman was not wrong. One simple piece of footwork and a single beautifully-timed punch ended the Brazilian’s 10-year unbeaten streak and stranglehold on the featherweight division.

McGregor had evolved and not even pound-for-pound king Aldo could stop him.

The Notorious spoke of working on his movement, balance and flexibility with respected movement coach Ido Portal in the run up to the bout.

But before UFC 194 and before Portal had even begun working with McGregor, he told London Reel how the Dubliner was changing the game…and nobody in the UFC right now has an answer for it.

“I love that he took a few of my ideas and applied them into his field,” said Portal.

“He is taking the generalist movement perspective inside fighting and definitely applying that and there is so much you can do with it.”

“Most fighters are standing there with their English or their Russian or their Portuguese – their language. And they’re waiting for you to ask this question.

“But all of a sudden you come up with something  and there is no answer for that specifically inside the techniques that you were taught.

“There is no specific technique to match that, and that’s where he shines – by asking those questions and by answering these unformed, mutated, but beautiful answers.

“It’s a true expression. He is doing the Bruce Lee thing in many ways – expressing the art of the human body.

“The style, the actions – he is bringing something genuine.”

McGregor’s opponents cannot ‘answer the question’ because they don’t know what ‘language’ it is and don’t know how to deal with his style.

“They don’t know what is that,” continued Portal. “What even is that? He is contributing something to the collective knowledge by bringing in his unique self, and building on top of the work of others, but bringing something genuine.”
