Daniel James had appeared certain to seal a move to Elland Road
Daniel James’ deadline day move from Swansea to Leeds United collapsed in the final minutes of the January transfer window.
The 21-year-old had undergone a medical with the Championship leaders on Thursday and was expected to finalise his switch to Marcelo Bielsa’s side soon after. This, however, failed to happen.
Swansea backed out of the deal – which would have been made a permanent one if Leeds had been promoted at the end of the season – shortly before the 11pm cut-off. They are now said to be hoping to renew efforts to get him to sign an improved contract at the Liberty Stadium.
The BBC report that Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins was unhappy with the terms of the deal, which would have seen Leeds defer the initial loan fee until summer and then spread out the transfer fee – said to be around £8.5m – over a three-year period.
A statement from Swansea, published in the early hours of Friday morning, clarified matters (as well as explaining that captain Leroy Fer would also be staying with the club).
‘Swansea City can confirm Daniel James will not be joining Leeds United, while skipper Leroy Fer will also be staying at the club,’ the statement read.
‘James travelled to Elland Road today (Thursday) to discuss a loan move with a view to a permanent transfer on enhanced terms should the Championship leaders secure promotion to the Premier League.
‘However, the clubs could not agree suitable terms and the 21-year-old will return to Swansea’
The Welsh international will now return to the club, who face Bristol City away on Saturday afternoon. It remains to be seen if James will be included in their squad for the game.
