Daniel Sturridge wait goes on as Liverpool striker is ruled out of Bournemouth cup tie

Striker shortage

Liverpool fans frustrated with their ongoing lack of threat in front of goal will have to wait a little longer.

That’s because Daniel Sturridge won’t return until the match against Chelsea at the very earliest.

The England man showed no signs of rust when bagging a brace in the win against Aston Villa – the only game this season in which the Reds have scored more than once – but was quickly back in the treatment room with an unspecified knee problem that has yet to clear up.

There had been hopes that Sturridge would be fit for the game against Southampton but he was again unavailable and new boss Jurgen Klopp told a press conference ahead of the Reds’ Capital One Cup tie against Bournemouth that the striker was again out of the running.

At least Klopp does have Christian Benteke, who appears to be rounding into some form after his superb header against the Saints, while fellow Belgium forward Divock Origi remains very much a work in progress.

But the German restated his faith in the players he inherited from Brendan Rodgers, despite being yet to register a win in the three games since his arrival.

He said:  “We had results, not the most satisfying results in the world but we didn’t have easy opponents. Tottenham away, not easy, Rubin Kazan, not easy and Southampton have lost no away games this season.

“I have no problems with this. I knew that when you’re new in a club you have to accept that the way is hard. We don’t have friendly games to get better. My faith in this team is really big.”
