Daniil Medvedev beats Novak Djokovic in US Open men’s final

Is this the start of a new dawn in men’s and women’s tennis?

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has beaten the Serbian superstar, Novak Djokovic, in the US Open men’s final.

The 25-year-old pushed the three-time winner right to the limit, beating him in straight sets to take home the first Grand Slam title of his career. Magic.

Medvedev did come into the tournament as the second seed but not many people would have backed him over the joint-most decorated player of all time.

The sets ended identically and while Djokovic didn’t seem to have enough in the tank, the crowd still got to see plenty of what makes him one of the greats. They made sure to show their appreciation:

Medvedev wasn’t the only finalist to win in straight sets this year either, as Brits and tennis fans around the world tuned in to watch Emma Raducanu win her first Grand Slam too – at the age of 18 no less.

Australian tennis legend, Rod Laver – who won the US Open’s men single’s title twice – was one of the first to congratulate the Russian player, who cruised through virtually every match this year.
