The collapse of David de Gea’s transfer to Real Madrid not only delayed his dream move back to Spain but has also cost the goalkeeper a small fortune.
Details of the contract that De Gea was due to sign following his proposed move from Manchester United have been leaked by FootballLeaks, and show that the player was scheduled to earn more than €82m (£64m) over the course of a six-year contract.
That figure was made up a weekly salary of €226,000 (£175,500) and a signing bonus of €10.9m (£8.45m).
Manchester United moved quickly to up De Gea’s Old Trafford wages from £35,000-a-week to match what he would have earned in Madrid, but even the loss of the signing bonus makes the paperwork snafu that scuppered his summer deadline switch a costly one.
