We don’t deserve a champion like Demetrious Johnson.
If you want a breakdown of the history of the UFC’s flyweight division, all you have to do is look at Demtrious Johnson’s title defences.John Dodson, John Moraga, Joseph Benavidez, Ali Bagautinov, Chris Cariaso, Kyoji Horiguchi, John Dodson again, Henry Cejudo, Tim Elliott, Wilson Reis and Ray Borg.
John Dodson, John Moraga, Joseph Benavidez, Ali Bagautinov, Chris Cariaso, Kyoji Horiguchi, John Dodson again, Henry Cejudo, Tim Elliott, Wilson Reis and Ray Borg have all attempted and failed to usurp DJ’s 125 lb throne.
In UFC 216’s co-main event, ‘Mighty Mouse’ broke Anderson Silva’s record for consecutive title defences by racking up his 11th on the trot. His fifth-round submission of Borg solidified his position as the most dominant champion the promotion has ever seen and he did it in sensational style.
He dominated his opponent everywhere, outlanding him by 172 strikes to 22 and scoring eight takedowns to the TazMExican Devil’s three. DJ saved his best moment for the very end too, getting the armbar submission after a suplex. He began the transition mid-air and locked it in before he hit the ground.

As if there was any doubt before, this win definitively proved that Johnson is the pound-for-pound king. Regardless of the level of competition he has faced comparatively to other champions, there’s no denying that what he does inside the Octagon is unlike anything we’ve seen from anyone else.
Fans will criticise him for not taking superfights, they might even call his utter domination boring, but on this night, everyone around the world appreciated his genius.
Everyone who tuned in knew they had just witnessed something very special.

Ya know, your typical suplex into armbar finish in round 5 to break the record. Mighty-Mouse ftw! #UFC216
