They then faced France in the round of 16, going behind early on before turning the game around and leading 2-1. They then capitulated, utterly helpless against the pace of France’s young team and departed after a 4-2 defeat.
Throughout the tournament there have been question marks over Lionel Messi, his influence on the team and whether anyone on the panel actually listens to or supports manager Jorge Sampaoli.
This has continued to thunder on even after their elimination and has resulted in Diego Maradona offering his services to his country for the attractive fee of exactly zero.
Speaking to Venezuelan TV station Telesur, saying: “Yes, I would do it for free. I wouldn’t ask for anything in return.”
