Arguably the most embarrassing display of announcing a winner in sports history

Legitimately difficult to watch

Ben Kiely

Remember when Bruce Buffer made an absolute hames of announcing the result of UFC 205’s co-main event?

That card will best be remembered for the headliner. Conor McGregor became the first fighter to hold two UFC belts simultaneously when he pulverised Eddie Alvarez. McGregor’s feat was so impressive that it made a lot of people forget about what happened directly before the headliners walked out.

After a five-round classic welterweight title fight, Buffer grabbed hold of the mic to announce the scores. In typically enthusiastic fashion, he revealed that the judges scored the fight 47-47, 47-47, 48-47 for the ‘winner’ by ‘split decision’ Tyron Woodley.

Of course, any MMA fan worth their salt instantly recognised that as a majority draw rather than a split decision. However, they wrapped the belt around Woodley’s waist and Joe Rogan got through about a minute of the Octagon interview before the error was corrected.

They brought Woodley and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson back into the centre of the cage to run back the announcement.

Beat that?

Challenge accepted.

Anyone who was watching FightPass in the wee hours of Thursday morning caught an even worse effort at announcing a winner during the Alaska Fighting Championships 139.

After the final buzzer sounded in the bout between David Booker and Elijah Terrell, both competitors were brought into the centre of the ring. Little did they know, the moment was about to be ruined for both of them.

Halfway through Booker’s moniker, the announcer changed his mind.

The referee had already raised Booker’s hands in the air when the announcer apologised for ‘getting it wrong’.

AFC

Much to debutant Terrell’s delight, he was announced as the winner.

He flexed and yelled in celebration of starting off his pro career with a win.

However, the ring announcer was called back by someone outside the cage.

The mics clearly picked up the man telling him that he had actually got the winner correct the first time.

AFC

Cool as a breeze, he went back out to correct the error.

He didn’t even look Terrell in the eye as he sauntered passed him to issue an apology.

AFC

Terrell couldn’t believe it.

AFC

The ring announcer explained that he actually got half of the announcement right.

Yeah, cheers for that, man.

AFC

Booker consoled Terrell as the ring announcer issued another apology.

Both men were dragged back to the centre of the cage, the referee grabbed their hands and the ring announcer gave it another go.

Third time’s the charm.
