Eni Aluko accuses England women of being ‘selfish’ for Mark Sampson celebration

The Lionesses celebrated their opening goal with Sampson

Eni Aluko has used Twitter to hit out at members of the England Women’s team after their goal celebration with coach, Mark Sampson.

Aluko, who has amassed over 100 caps for the national side, accused Sampson of bullying, harassment and racism. Two investigations – one by the Football Association; another conducted independently – have since cleared him of any wrongdoing. The Chelsea player hasn’t been selected for the national team since making the accusations.

The Lionesses recorded a comfortable 6-0 victory over Russia in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, with Nikita Parris scoring the game’s opener after 11 minutes. After the goal, Parris ran over to Sampson on the England bench, beckoning her teammates to join the celebrations.

Aluko wasn’t in attendance for the game, which was played at Tranmere’s Prenton Park, although made her feelings about the celebration known when she saw footage of it.

After pointing out that many of the players seen celebrating the goal had voted for her as their representative during contract discussions with the FA, she went on to write: ‘It goes without saying I’m delighted, relieved, blessed to be sat where I am right now. Blessings in disguise are often the best blessings.

‘For the most together team in the world tonight’s ‘message’ only shows a level of disrespect that represents division and selfish action.’
