One team going for the league, the other still not sure of what it’s supposed to be going for – this for the last 10 years.
But there’s an old theory that applies particularly to things like five-a-side and the like. It’s not about who has the best players that wins – it’s about who has the most worst players that loses.
In a combined team of Everton and Liverpool, the Toffees come out on top but they would never under these current regimes finish ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s men. Part of that is because of the collective magic that the German is whipping up but most of it is because they have too many passengers outside of their strengths at Goodison that offer little of nothing.
The real reason they have more players than Liverpool in this side though is through depressing default. The ‘Pool are a serious prospect but they have too many glaring gaps that need filling and too many unacceptable names to even be considered.
Maarten Stekelenburg
By default because you’re not going to play Mignolet or Karius given the choice.
Seamus Coleman
On Football Friday Live, Dion Fanning and Ledley King debated who of the Everton squad would make the Liverpool team.
– “Seamus Coleman would definitely get into that side,” Fanning said.
– “I’m not sure, Coleman ahead of Clyne?” King questioned.
– “Yeah,” Dion was leaving little room for debate.Â
– “Yeah?”
– “Yeah.”
It’s as simple as that. It’s as simple as Coleman being the best in the league.
Joel Matip
Strong, athletic and a huge addition to the Liverpool team. Most crucially, he’s definitely better than Phil Jagielka.
Ashley Williams
Because he’s better than Jagielka and Lovren.
Leighton Baines
Because he’s actually a left back.
Adam Lallana
Has suddenly, from nowhere, become a really, really, really good player.
Idrissa Gana Gueye
Either his dynamism and energy and exciting directness or Jordan Henderson walking around as if he’s carrying TVs under his arms roaring at the top of his lungs to get the ball so he can roll it five metres on to the next man.
Georginio Wijnaldum
Because no matter how much every England fan wants him to be, Ross Barkley is not a world beater.
Sadio Mané
Relentless, ridiculous, rock ‘n’ roll. Mané does not f**king stop and any kind of ball in the direction of Liverpool’s right hand side is always a worthwhile venture.
Romelu Lukaku
Because Liverpool don’t play with a striker. And because he’s class.
Philippe Coutinho
Obviously.
