Fenerbahce introduce Islam Slimani with bizarre announcement video

Simon Lloyd

Nope, no idea either

Islam Slimani remains a Leicester player, just about.

Arriving from Sporting Lisbon for a fee of nearly £30m two years ago (when £30m was still quite a lot of a money to spend on a transfer), the Algerian international hasn’t really done much to justify his price tag while at the club.

Because of this, he’s now sealed his second loan move away from the club in eight months, having signed a temporary deal at Newcastle United for the second half of last season. As is often the case for players who don’t quite cut it in the Premier League, Slimani has moved to Turkey, where he will spend the entirety of the 2018/19 campaign with Fenerbahce.

Now, as Twitter has shown us in recent years, Turkish clubs bloody love making a fuss over new transfers. From last summer’s #ComeToBesiktas business to the effort second division Adana Demirspor went to in announcing a deal for former Manchester United midfielder, Anderson, there are numerous examples of this.

With this in mind, it’s fair to say the tweet Fenerbahce posted to announce the acquisition of Slimani was a little disappointing. Or perhaps just plain weird…

Accompanied by some very dramatic music, a video, apparently shot from a cameraphone, shows Slimani walking into a room wearing his new team’s shirt. Taking up a position in the middle of two flags – one Turkish and the other featuring the Fenerbahce crest – he puts on a pair of sunglasses and flexes his right bicep. Briefly looking at his arm, he then looks back at the camera, which seems to linger on him a little too long.

Impressive, in its own special way.

Although Slimani’s departure from Leicester is only temporary, Leonardo Ulloa has now left on a permanent basis. Ulloa, who had been at the club for four years, has now joined Mexican side Pachuca.
