Five-year-old adorably calls Celtic to apologise for missing weekend game

A die-hard fan in the making

Darragh Murphy

Football fandom starts early in Scotland.

At five years old, we were probably still struggling to tie our shoelaces unassisted and the biggest concern facing us each day was whether to have fish fingers before or after kicking a ball against a wall for an hour.

But young Celtic fan Louis Kayes had a much more pressing dilemma facing him at the weekend.

Enjoying his first season as a season ticket-holder, the five-year-old was distraught when he learned that a scheduling clash meant that he would be unable to attend the Hoops’ match against Motherwell on Saturday afternoon.

A birthday party engagement was given priority by young Louis but, as any hardcore fan would, he felt awful about not being able to cheer on his beloved Celtic.

But Louis is a problem-solver and he was not about to sit idly by, riddled with guilt, without ringing the club to let them know.

“I saw Louis with my phone and then I heard the recorded message you get when you phone Celtic,” his mother Lisa explained to the Daily Record.

“He had the phone on the loud speaker function.

“Before I knew it I heard him telling the club that he wouldn’t be at the match because he had to go to his friend’s birthday party.

“I said: ‘What are you doing? You’ll be costing me a fortune.’

“But he just said he was letting Celtic know the reason why he wouldn’t be at the match.

“I had just spent a while explaining to him that because of the birthday party he wouldn’t be able to go.

“He wasn’t happy about it and I think he was just wanting to explain to Celtic the reason for his absence.

“Even when we were driving to the party he let it be known that Scott Brown would notice he wasn’t there.

“Then he said he was worried that Brendan Rodgers would notice too.”

Notice? Louis, he’d applaud your character for having the determination to pick up the phone. You know that.
