Many supporters claimed Strachan was to blame for missing out on a play-off position, suggesting his team selections during the early qualifiers cost the team.
An announcement on Thursday afternoon confirmed that Strachan has left his position”by mutual consent”.
Almost instantly, thoughts were turning to who might be in line to replace Strachan, who took charge of the national team in 2013. Amongst others, Sky Sports’ Keith Downie tweeted that an early front-runner for the job is David Moyes, who left Sunderland following their relegation from the Premier League last season.
Former Sunderland manager David Moyes the early favourite to take over from Gordon Strachan. It's arguably the only job he could now take.

The former Everton boss, whose reputation was tarnished after a disastrous spell in charge of Manchester United, recently indicated that he would be interested in returning to management. As well as spells at United and Sunderland, Moyes also managed Real Sociedad, a club at which he once successfully shared some crisps with supporters.
Strangely, as football fans heard the news of a potential Moyes return, it seems many weren’t all that impressed…

The early odds suggest #Scotland are going to hire David Moyes or Malky Mackay and I immediately want Gordon Strachan back

I swear to god if we hire Moyes to replace Strachan… Scottish football could somehow get even more depressing

Looking with a glass half full approach – at least if it is Moyes then he can’t sign Darron Gibson #scotland #strachan

Moyes has failed in his last 3 jobs. I would 100% have kept Strachan over him and I'm happy to see the back of Strachan. @ScottishFA
