Gareth Bale was not in the least bit arsed about breaking Gary Lineker’s La Liga goals record

It was hardly the finest goal of his career, but his tap in against Sevilla on Sunday night was enough to earn Gareth Bale a place in the record books.

The close-range finish saw him eclipse Jonathan Woodgate Gary Lineker as La Liga’s highest scoring Brit, a record that had stood for over 27 years.

Such a momentous occasion, surely Bale would be feeling pretty chuffed with himself? Well, not really.

In fact, the former Spurs man revealed after they game that he wasn’t even aware of the record until he checked his phone after the game.

“I only just found out, my friends text me,” he explained.

Predictably, he followed this by trotting out the usual “so long as the team are winning…” line that every footballer likes use once in a while:

“It’s obviously nice to break records, but as long as the team are winning and improving that is the main thing.”

What a lovely, consummate professional.
