Gary Neville gives a very Gary Neville assessment of Mesut Özil’s recent performances

"I can't be doing with watching him play football sometimes"

Simon Lloyd

As we’re all well aware by now, Gary Neville has always been one for telling it as it is.

His refreshing honesty is one of the reasons the former Manchester United captain is so widely respected by football fans for his punditry work with Sky Sports.

On Sunday afternoon, Neville was part of Sky’s Super Sunday team looking ahead to Arsenal’s meeting with Manchester City. Discussing Arsenal, Neville gave a typically frank assessment of the their players this season, pulling no punches when it came to discussing Mesut Özil.

“His loyalty in some of his players is misplaced,” Neville said of Arsene Wenger. “They disappoint me.

“They have a weak spine. The idea that they’re blaming the managerial situation at the moment when they’re melting on the football pitch because there’s some negativity around the football club just typifies them, for me.

The situation around contracts – I don’t like the Sanchez situation but I think on the pitch I can live with it because I think, to be fair, he fights for every single thing in the world.

“Mesut Özil – I can’t be doing with watching him play football sometimes.

“That seems disrespectful from someone who was a clogger as a footballer on someone with so much talent.

“But when you’ve watched Ronaldo and Messi who give their absolute all every single match, I’m sorry but I’m not going to sit here as a football person and accept that someone plays football like he’s down a coal mine.”
