Gary Neville accused a journalist of asking “ridiculous” questions about his standing with Valencia fans.
The former Manchester United captain is yet to lead Los Che to a league victory, and the latest defeat – at home to lowly Sporting Gijon – left the team just five points clear of the relegation zone.
But despite apparent criticism of his decision to withdraw fan favourite Pablo Piatti, Neville is confident he still has the backing of the Mestalla faithful.
According to the Daily Mail, the 40-year-old responded to being probed about fans potentially turning on him in very strong terms, saying “I find this question ridiculous.”
“Don’t put this onto the fans. Please don’t sit there and put this on the fans, it’s a big mistake you’re making,” Neville said.
“You misrepresent what they’ve shown from the first minute to the last and your job as reporter – and I’ve been a reporter – is to represent fairly what happens and that does not represent what has happened among the 30,000 fans there today.”
