VIDEO: Gary Neville sent to stands for protesting controversial late winner

Kevin Beirne

Things haven’t been easy for Gary Neville in Spain.

The former Manchester United captain has struggled since arriving at the Mestalla Stadium in December, but it looked like he was turning things around as his team were set to advance to the Europa League quarter-finals.

Despite a 1-0 defeat in the opening leg, Valencia had one foot in the next round after running out to a 2-0 lead against Athletic Club Bilbao on Thursday night.

But with 15 minutes remaining, Aderlan Aduriz Zubeldia finished off a beautiful move to give Athletic the advantage on away goals.

While it was a goal even Barcelona would be proud of, Neville believed there was a handball in the build up – which you can see at the very beginning of the above video.

Rather than keep it to himself, the former England defender decided to voice his concerns to the fourth official, resulting in Neville being sentenced to the stands for the remainder of the game.

With their coach no longer on the sidelines, Valencia could not find a way past their Spanish rivals and were knocked out on away goals.
