Harry Maguire has become the unlikeliest of heroes
The entirety of the current England team has made the country fall in love with international football again. And in doing so, some unlikely heroes have risen to national treasure status.
One of those heroes is Harry Maguire, whose composure on the ball and mountainous strength in the air has made him the perfect player for Gareth Southgate’s back three. Maguire scored the opener in England’s 2-0 win over Sweden yesterday with a bullet header from an Ashley Young corner.
But before that heroic moment, Maguire was dominating everyone’s Twitter timeline after a photograph of him talking to his girlfriend after England had beaten Colombia on penalties. His stance, which made him look like he was chatting up a stranger in a Wetherspoons, sparked some incredible creativity from the hilarious minds of Twitter.
Kyle Walker even got in on the banter with this hilarious take.
Yeah so a good header doesn’t hurt. I mean the moment you head it proper, you feel it’s a good one. Know what I mean love? pic.twitter.com/a5b8UqDjv2

Maguire has since shown his great sense of humour by providing his own version of the viral meme.
“Can you ask the neighbours to put the bins out on Monday? We’re not going home just yet” 🏴 pic.twitter.com/s1g3P3jj34

England will be staying in Russia until Saturday night at the earliest, and Sunday night at the latest. A semi-final against Croatia awaits – England’s first semi-final since 1990.
It is the best chance they will have to reach a World Cup final for a long, long time. Let’s hope Maguire can inspire another victory.
