Hawk-Eye reveals how agonisingly close Middlesbrough youngster came to first goal

'Bloody hell... that's a goal'

Simon Lloyd

A couple of goals from Patrick Bamford were enough for Middlesbrough to see off Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Youngster Marcus Tavernier also came agonisingly close to adding a third goal for Boro – one that would’ve been his first ever in professional football – as the game approached full-time.

The 18-year-old’s header rebounded off a post before being nodded clear by Ritchie de Laet.

Tavernier’s reaction suggested the ball had come close to crossing the line and, as Hawk-Eye Goal Line Technology confirmed, it was a matter of millimetres from being awarded.

Take a look…

The ball was so close to crossing the line, some refused to believe it wasn’t given as a goal…
