Debutant Adam Bogdan was Liverpool’s unlikely hero in the League Cup, saving three penalties as the Reds crept past Carlisle United.
The game finished 1-1, with veteran Derek Asamoah cancelling out Danny Ings’ opener.
The League 2 side went the distance, holding on in extra time and even showboating a little, while their fans taunted Brendan Rodgers.
Best chance of extra time goes to Carlisle, whose fans had just been shouting Ole! as they passed around Liverpool.

But Bogdan, a summer signing from Bolton, kept out spot-kicks from Danny Grainger, Luke Joyce and Bastien Hery to see Liverpool through 3-2 on penalties.
It is the second straight year that Rodgers’ side have reached the fourth round via a shoot-out, following last season’s epic victory over Middlesbrough.
But it marked the end of the road for valiant Carlisle, who won at QPR in the second round but couldn’t quite muster another giant-killing.
