You know what you’re getting with Heurelho Gomes. Or, more precisely, you know you can never know what to expect with the Watford goalkeeper.
The Brazil international has been more erratic than most throughout his career, be it at PSV, Tottenham or this season at Vicarage Road.
For every afternoon of sheer genius (such as saving two penalties from Saido Berahino in one game in April) there have been moments that make you question how he ever became a top-level goalkeeper.
And, with the Hornets hosting Crystal Palace on Boxing Day’s early televised game, the veteran knew it would be a perfect opportunity to show the world what he is all about.
First off, Gomes responded to the sight of Christian Benteke racing through on goal by treating the Belgian’s shins like a field goal attempt.
Gomes should have gone there. Ridiculous challenge at knee height. Serious foul play. #cpfc #watfordfc

He escaped a card for the foul, however, and got down well to save Benteke’s tame spot-kick.

If you were asked to describe Gomes to someone who hadn’t seen him play before, you would probably show them that minute of football.
The former Spurs number one may be many things, but he is not boring.
Helping his team recover from situations caused by no one but himself is pure, undiluted Heurelho Gomes as his best.
All-time classic Heurelho Gomes that.

That was Heurelho Gomes in a nutshell.

I'm just hearing that Heurelho Gomes saved a penalty from Christian Benteke and I am falling off my chair in surprise.
