Udinese don’t sign Tom Huddlestone, but get Watford’s Ben Wilmot instead

Simon Lloyd

Wimot will spend the remainder of the season in Serie A

Tom Huddlestone to Udinese was one of the most talked about moves of transfer deadline day. Sadly, though, it didn’t actually happen – despite reports suggesting the former Tottenham midfielder had held talks over a permanent move.

The reports linking the veteran Derby midfielder with a move to Italy first surfaced on Thursday afternoon, only to be debunked by Sky Italia hours later. Udinese did, however, come knocking for another English player: highly rated Watford youngster,  Ben Wilmot.

The 19-year-old completed a loan switch to the Serie A club hours before the transfer window closed.

Wilmot has made six  appearances for Watford this season, the latest coming in their 2-1  defeat to Tottenham  at Wembley in midweek.

Wilmot joined Watford from Stevenage last summer, signing a five-year contract at Vicarage Road. The central defender becomes the third Watford  player to join Udinese, their sister club, in this transfer window.  Marvin Zeegelaar’s move to the Italian side was confirmed on Wednesday, while Stefano Okaka joined them earlier in the month.

Watford are currently ninth in the Premier League and face a trip to the south coast to face Brighton on Saturday afternoon.
