Ireland were 6/1 outsiders for their home match against Germany, but Shane Long’s strike shocked the World Champions.
Latching on to a clearance from substitute goalkeeper Darren Randolph, the Southampton striker ran through on goal to beat Manuel Neuer and give his country a surprise lead with just 20 minutes remaining.
Ireland held on for a win, a result that put Martin O’Neill’s side in pole position to join Germany at Euro 2016, with Poland drawing 2-2 with Scotland at Hampden Park.
With one game remaining, victory away to Poland would ensure they make it to the European Championships in France, while they are guaranteed at least a play-off place.
