Wayne Rooney is often mocked for being ‘thick’. As if he’s a Neanderthal man who drags his knuckles onto the pitch every game.
It’s a view that seems to contradict that of his fellow pros in recent years, who describe Rooney as a talismanic leader of men around the dressing room.
Both his Manchester United and England teammates have repeatedly stated that their captain has grown into the role. He is the first help youngsters and new recruits.
It is also said that Rooney is actually a very good orator, and that he has provided more than his fair share of rousing team talks. This in particular elicits guffaws amongst fans.
For many it is hard to imagine ‘Shrek’ coming out with anything other than a loud grunt, or nervous ‘eeerm’. But now we have a small insight into Rooney the motivator.
He was filmed entering the changing room after becoming England’s all-time top goalscorer to applause from his teammates, and asked to say a few words. He responded with a short speech which was humble, eloquent and inspiring.
In it, he thanks the coaches, the players and the staff for working so hard to make his dream possible. He also offers words of encouragement to younger players such as Harry Kane, Ross Barkley and Raheem Sterling – and lays down the gauntlet for them to one day surpass his achievement.
