Jamie Carragher just had to mention Everton as he remembered his only European goal

He couldn't resist

As a player, Jamie Carragher knew his priorities and thus didn’t venture into the opposition half all too often.

Carragher had been known to score the very occasional goal though. In 737 appearances for Liverpool, he managed to find the net four times.

When you’re dealing with such a low tally, it’s easy to remember each one. It’s not very difficult for the Sky Sports pundit to remember the anniversaries of those rare moments.

Wednesday marked 12 years since his penultimate goal in a Liverpool shirt. It’s one that even hardcore Reds supporters would be forgiven for forgetting as it came against a little-known Lithuanian side called FBK Kaunas in the Champions League second qualifying round.

It was the only goal Carragher ever scored in Europe, so he made sure to mark it on Instagram. However, he couldn’t help but seize the opportunity to score a dig on Everton in the process.

Liverpool were the Champions League holders that season but they were forced to take the tough road to qualification after finishing outside the top four in the Premier League after Everton, who took the fourth spot, complained to Uefa.

The Reds beat Welsh outfit Total Network Solutions, Kaunas and CSKA Sofia to qualify for the group stages of Europe’s top club competition. Everton’s campaign started and ended in the third qualifying round after they were sent packing by Villarreal.
