As a player, Pep Guardiola was a key part of Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona side in the early 1990s.
The Manchester City boss has since spoken of his admiration for his old boss, claiming the Dutchman was a significant factor in his decision to become a manager.
Months after Cruyff’s death, the legendary footballer’s son has suggested his father would be a fan of the football being played by Guardiola’s Manchester City side.
Jordi Cruyff, who played for Manchester United between 1996 and 2000, was speaking at the launch of a new book about his father.
“He always had a big admiration for English football,” he explained. “He loved that, so he really liked the opportunity when I was at United for four years.
“If he can still watch football he’s probably a big Manchester City fan.”
After a decorated playing career with first club Ajax and Barcelona, Johan Cruyff was also successful as a manager for both teams.
After winning two domestic cups and a Cup Winners Cup with Ajax, he returned to the Camp Nou, where he won 11 trophies, including their first European Cup triumph in 1992.
My Turn: the autobiography by Johan Cruyff is available to buy from October 6.
